Briefs: Registration on for Hearts for Kids race
Registration is under way for the third annual Have a Heart for Kids 5K run/walk hosted by the Yuba City Education Foundation.
The fundraiser is at 9 a.m. Feb. 23, with on-site registration at 7:30 a.m., at River Valley High School in Yuba City.
The entry fee is $20 for adults and $10 for ages 18 and under due by Feb. 16; or $25 and $15, respectively, afterward.

Music students invited to compete
Music students are invited to participate in the Tri-Counties Music Competition open to youths in grades first to 12th in Sutter, Yuba and Colusa counties.
Applications are due by March 23.
The competition, with piano, voice and instrumental categories, starts at 9 a.m. April 13 at Cornerstone Church, 700 Washington Ave., Yuba City.

Volunteers sought for book giveaway
Volunteers interested in giving away free copies of books are sought for the second annual World Book Night US, part of a global campaign to encourage reading.
The Friends of the Packard Library of Yuba County and Dinah's on D Street Books and More are organizing the event.
The deadline is Jan. 25 to register as a volunteer; the book giveaway is April 23, the birthday of William Shakespeare.
The Friends, Dinah's and The Brick Coffee House and Cafe will host a reception for volunteers to pick up their books 5 p.m.-7 p.m. April 16 at Dinah's, 320 D St., Marysville.
