Education Briefs: Garden club sponsors $1,000 scholarship

Sutter Buttes Garden Club is awarding students $1,000 scholarships to promote education in landscape design, horticulture, landscape architecture, floral design and agriculture.

Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation and demonstrate high academic achievement.

The number of scholarships awarded depends on the number of applications received.

Applications are due by June 1.

Rio Oso

Gallagher completes bachelor's degree

Brenda Gallagher of Rio Oso received a bachelor's degree in applied arts and sciences in fall 2012 from Rochester Institute of Technology's Center for Multidisciplinary Studies.

The university, in Rochester, NY, has more than 200 career-oriented and professional programs.

Yuba City

Johl selected as delegate

Yuba City native Jagpal "JP" Johl Jr., a student at the University of San Francisco, was selected as a Clinton Global Initiative University delegate for the third year in a row.

He was chosen for his work with The School Fund, a nonprofit group that connects those who donating funds from around the world with students in the developing world in need of funding.

Johl was also selected for the StartingBloc Fellowship, based on his work in the field of social good, and is a candidate for the One Young World Summit in South Africa.

Yuba-Sutter

Rideout selects teen leadership council

Thirty-nine high school students from throughout Yuba-Sutter were selected as members of the 2013 Rideout Teen Leadership Council, providing them the opportunity to gain insight into a career in health care.

The program allows students to shadow health care professionals, participate in philanthropic activities and help plan and host events that benefit the Rideout Health Foundation.

Students duties include attending monthly meetings, participating in activities sanctioned by the foundation and acting as spokespersons for the foundation and liaisons for their high school.

High schools represented include Faith Christian, Lindhurst, Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts, Marysville, River Valley, Sutter Union, Wheatland and Yuba City.

Mid-Valley

Association offers youth driving scholarship

Applications are being accepted for the Youth Driving Scholarships provided by the Yuba Sutter Indo American Business Association.

Open to students ages 15 to 17 years in Yuba, Sutter, Colusa and Butte counties, the program awards four scholarships for driver's education courses.

Students must have at least a 3.0 grade point average. Applications must include a letter of recommendation and a written essay and can be obtained online at YubaSutterIABA.org.

Completed applications are due by May 31.
