LOCAL ROUNDUP: Yuba College football picks up first win

East Nic football tops Stone Ridge

It took a few games, but Yuba College's football team has found the win column.

Sophomore running back Juan Johnson rumbled for 171 yards on 37 carries and a touchdown and the 49ers' defense didn't allow a score until there was less than 5 minutes remaining en route to a 24-7 victory over West Valley on Saturday night in Linda.

Antonio Stuckey got Yuba on the board when he picked off a pass and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter.

The Niners (1-2) added to their lead on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Zach Hutcheson to Jeremy Williams in the second period, and Johnson scored on a 4-yard TD run to make it 21-0 Yuba.

John Leal capped the scoring with a 21-yard field goal to put the 49ers up 24-0 in the fourth.

Hutcheson finished the game 10 of 16 for 131 yards and a touchdown. Williams hauled in six of those passes for 93 yards and a score.

Yuba City High product Max Flores and fellow linebacker Dylan Misiluti both shined defensively, assistant coach Tomas Rodriguez said.

Yuba's next game will be at San Jose on Saturday at 5 p.m.

FOOTBALL

East Nicolaus 40, Stone Ridge Christian 24

In Merced — Andrew Sills totaled more than 100 yards rushing with two touchdowns and the Spartans defeated the Knights in nonleague play.

Sills scored on TD runs of 12 and 7 yards. Jeffery Limary scored a rushing touchdown from 31 yards out.

Junior quarterback Zach Schuler added two rushing touchdowns, one from 56 yards out and another from 2 yards, and hooked up with Dylan Thornsberry for a 19-yard score.

East Nicolaus (3-2) is on a bye this week before Mid-Valley League play begins on Oct. 5 at home against Colusa.

VOLLEYBALL

Sutter, Yuba City compete at tourney

In Davis — Bianca Almeida had 33 kills, 12 digs and two aces and Kylee Sallaberry added 13 kills, 18 assists, 13 digs and three aces of her own as the Huskies went 3-2 at the Davis Fall Classic on Saturday to finish fifth out of 32 teams.

Sutter (11-7) defeated Drake and Woodland and fell to Placer during pool play. The Huskies then topped Yuba City before losing to Napa in the quarterfinals.

Ava Payton had 17 kills and two aces, Erika Larsen finished with nine kills and 16 blocks and Shelby Hill blocked six to help lead Sutter at the net.

Savannah Besso dished out 34 assists, Alix Russell helped the cause with 17 digs and Brooke Smallwood finished with 13 digs for the Huskies.

Yuba City placed 11th after going 2-2 in the tournament.

The Honkers defeated Churchill County and Woodland Christian, but lost to Rio Americano and Sutter.

Ally Reines totaled 54 digs over the four games, while setter Brittany Walker amassed 81 assists, 12 digs, four blocks, three kills and six aces.

Senior Maddie Collins was solid with 23 kills, 19 blocks, eight digs and seven aces. Katie Covey added 13 kills, five blocks and 12 digs to round out the day for Yuba City.
