PREP ROUNDUP: Chavez leads Yuba City soccer past Natomas

Michael Chavez recorded a hat trick and the Yuba City High boys soccer team cruised past Natomas 4-0 in a Tri-County Conference matchup at home on Monday.

The win sets up a pivitol match against River Valley on Wednesday as the two teams sit atop the conference standings at the midway point.

Two of Chavez's goals were assisted by Javier Fernandez, while Erik Uribe dished out the other assist.

Donovan Guzman scored the fourth goal for the Honkers, which improved to 6-3-3 overall and 3-1-0 in conference.

The Yuba City JV team 2-0 to improve to 2-1-1.

Josh Contreras and Juan Lomelli each scored a goal, while Luis Aguillar provided the assists. Jagroop Clair stood out on defense for the Honkers.

River Valley 3, Woodland 2

In Woodland — The Falcons flushed the Wolves in a TCC match that put them at the top of the conference standings.

For River Valley, Castulo Carbajal scored unassisted in the first half. Melad Rahim and Brandon Blancas, assisted by Castulo, scored in the second half.

Lindhurst 2, Mesa Verde 1

In Citrus Heights — The Blazers picked up their first Golden Empire League victory of the season.

Bryan Gonzalez scored on an assist from Juan Medina, while Riley Carns scored on an assist from Omar Rocha.

With the victory, Lindhurst improved to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in league.

Capital Christian 4, Marysville 0

In Sacramento — The Indians allowed two early goals and were "dominated" by the Cougars in suffering their first GEL loss of the year.

"They dominated us," said Marysville coach Steve Tennis. "No excuses, they just beat us up."

With the loss, the Indians slip to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in league.

The Marysville JV team also fell, 9-0.

Richard Thao and Jericho Ridarte were credited with quality outings for Marysville, which slipped to 0-3-1 overall and 0-2-0 in league.

RV, YC compete at Stanford Invite

In Stanford — River Valley High junior Leanne Jarvis put in another strong performance on Saturday by taking sixth out of 220 runners in the Division II race at the prestigiuous Stanford Invitational.

Jarvis covered the 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 6 seconds to break her own school record by 3 seconds. Her teammate, junior Harkiren Everest, placed 96th with a time of 21:29.

In the boys Division II race, senior Swarnjit Boyal placed 19th out of 249 runners with a time of 16:44, while fellow senior Jacob Clayton placed 84th in a time of 17:38.

Inderpreet Singh was 86th in 17:44, Aaron Hutton came in 123rd in 18:07 and Andres Quijas ran 18:49 for 193rd place.

Amrit Boya l (217th, 19:15) and Shahrukh Anwer (219th, 19:16) rounded out the top seven competitors for the Falcons, who placed 18th out of 43 teams.

Yuba City's Holly McAlister, Kate Aldridge, Harpreet Kaur and Matt Bailey also competed at the event.

McAlister topped the Honker girls by finishing 82nd in 21:21, her personal best for the distance, while Aldridge (140th, 22:54) and Kaur (196th, 26:47) also ran well.

Bailey, the lone Honker varsity boy, recorded a personal best by clocking in at 19:28 for 188th place.

FROSH FOOTBALL

Yuba City 54, Cordova Frosh 27

In Yuba City — Alex Rowe tossed touchdown passes of 18 and 24 yards to Issac Torres and added a 12-yard TD pass to Steven Abbott in lifting the Honkers to a nonleague win over Cordova on Thursday night.

Rowe also had scoring runs of 1 and 7 yards, and Torres added a 38-yard touchdown run for Yuba City, which upped its record to 5-1 with the victory.

Mikey Passaglia scored from 14 yards out, Bailey Elkins had a 12-yard TD run and Gavin Durkin, Donald Wagner and Brandon Hill each played well defensively for the Honkers.

Justin Branch had an interception and Donald Wagner converted six of eight extra points in the victory.
