LOCAL ROUNDUP: Yuba College football races past Shasta
The Yuba College football team received a huge day from running back Juan Johnson and the 49ers improved to 2-1 in the Bay Valley Conference with a 34-22 victory over Shasta at Memorial Stadium in Redding on Saturday.
Johnson carried the ball 47 times for 228 yards and three touchdowns.
Lurell Johnson caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Zach Hutcheson in the third quarter, opening up Yuba's lead to 27-3.
John Leal kicked two field goals for Yuba (4-4 overall), one from 44 yards out and another from 25.
Jalyn Crenshaw and Joe Swett both had interceptions for the 49ers and Terick Rogers totaled 10 tackles. Max Flores made two sacks.
The Niners continue BVC play at home next week against Los Medanos.
Yuba 5, Contra Costa 3
In Linda — Shea Galasphey had two goals and two assists, Wendy Valencia added a pair of goals and Erica Sanchez scored a goal as well to lead the Niners to their second BVC win of the season on Friday.
Live Oak's Topete moves on
In Oroville — Live Oak senior Lucero Topete advanced to the section quarterfinals after recording a pair of wins at the Northern Section singles championships at Las Plumas High on Saturday.
Topete, who is the No. 2 seed in the tournament, beat Pleasant Valley's Malori Wagner 6-0, 6-0, and followed that up with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Chico's Hannah Mikels.
Topete also teamed up with Jacque Mullen in the doubles side of the tournament and went 2-0 to advance to the section semifinals.
The Lions' duo beat a team from Oroville 6-2, 6-0 and booked their ticket to the semis with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Colusa.
The quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on Monday at the Chico Racquet Club.
Faith Christian 2, Millennium Christian 0
In Yuba City — The Lions moved to 20-2 on the year with a 25-15, 25-11 victory the Falcons on Friday.
Abby Maddalena had six kills, and Rachel Lego and Tina Hendricks had strong serving games in the win.
