LOCAL ROUNDUP: Yuba volleyball still cruising

YC, LO tennis staying strong

The Yuba College volleyball team cruised past Contra Costa 25-8, 25-10, 25-14 in a Bay Valley Conference match in San Pablo on Tuesday.

The victory helped improve the 49ers' record to 12-0 in conference and 19-1 overall with four matches remaining.

Angela DeHaan led with 11 kills, while Brenna McDonald followed with eight and Katie Reiland added six for the 49ers.

Sam Foster had 32 assists and six digs, while Shaila Gidel chipped in with eight digs and two aces and Katie Olson recorded three kills, five digs and three aces.

GIRLS TENNIS

Yuba City 5, Christian Brothers 4

In Yuba City — The Honkers earned their first Division II Sac-Joaquin Section playoff victory in six years.

Hannah Poukish won 6-3, 6-4, Sophie Poukish rolled 6-0, 6-2, Kendell Cheim cruised 6-4, 6-0 and Anisha Gill recorded a clean sheet in a 6-0, 6-0 victory for the Honkers (13-0).

In the doubles competition, Lunden Fletcher and Kaitlyn Boune pulled off a 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 victory.

Yuba City will face Rio Americano in Sacramento on Monday in the second round.

Live Oak wraps up sectionals

In Chico — Lucero Topete made her way to the quarterfinals for the first time in Lions' history before falling 6-0, 6-0 to Chico's No. 2 Kathleen Hutcheson in the Northern Section singles and doubles championships on Monday.

Topete knocked off Red Bluff's No. 1 Ginger Shaffer 6-4, 6-4 to advance.

For the first time since 1976, a Live Oak doubles team advanced to the semifinals.

Jacque Mullen and Topete eventually fell to Chico's No. 2 team 6-4, 1-6, 0-6.

BOYS SOCCER

Cosumnes Oaks 5, Yuba City 0

In Elk Grove — The Honkers fell behind 2-0 early and couldn't recover in the opening round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs.

Yuba City trailed 2-0 at halftime and 3-0 midway through the second half. The Wolfpack scored two goals within the last five minutes of regulation.

YC ends it season with a 9-6-4 record.

VOLLEYBALL

Sutter 3, Wheatland 0

In Sutter — The Huskies stayed undefeated in Butte View League play with a 25-22, 25-16, 25-17 victory over the rival Pirates.

Ava Payton led the Huskies (20-7, 7-0) with 12 kills and Bianca Almeida added eight kills and two blocks. Erika Larsen recorded seven kills and two blocks.

Savannah Besso dished out 28 assists and had an ace to go with eight service points. Brooke Smallwood also tallied eight service points with three aces and two digs.

Kylee Sallaberry put up a team-high nine service points to go with and an ace and dig. Alix Russell picked up two digs.

Wheatland (14-4, 5-2) was led by Kirstin Johnson's 10 kills, Jamie Adams' 15 assists and Mikayla McLanahan's six digs.

Sutter looks to complete its eighth straight undefeated BVL season on Thursday at Orland.

The Huskies' JV team (7-0 in BVL) beat Wheatland 2-0 with game scores of 25-12 and 25-21.

Taylor Cooper had six kills, Sara Stephenson added five kills and Chloe Heape set them up with 11 assists. Martina Damboriena served five aces.

Marysville 3, Dixon 0

In Marysville — Candice Hugi recorded 11 kills and a pair of aces to help lead the Indians past Dixon in Golden Empire League action.

With the victory, Marysville improves to 13-10 overall and 9-6 in league.

Annie Wooten had four aces, three kills, two digs, while Marimar Terriquez dished out 12 assists and three aces.

Morgan Cowan-Fayter delivered three aces, two kills and three digs.

The Marysville JV team won 25-18, 25-23 thanks to eight combined kills by Jenny Garrison and Ashley Adamson.

The frosh team fell 25-16, 16-25, 15-13. Megan Sandler led the team with five kills and three digs.

Durham 3, East Nicolaus 0

In Durham — Jan Navarro powered six kills, dished out three aces and three digs in a Sacramento Valley League loss for the Spartans (6-19, 3-8).

Macie Walker added two blocks and two kills, while Jennifer Sterling chipped in four aces and five digs.

New Life Chr. 3, Global Youth Charter 0

In Olivehurst — Rachel Whiteley had 25 service points, seven aces and six kills to help power the Crusaders in Northern Pacific Athletic League action on Monday.

Freshman Belle Knight recorded 24 service points and 14 assists for New Life (15-3, 9-0).
