Men's basketball team opens with blowout win
The Yuba College volleyball team clinched the Bay Valley Conference outright Friday night with one regular season game remaining on its schedule.
The 49ers topped Napa College 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 25-16 in front of a raucous home crowd to improve to 15-0 in conference and 22-1 overall.
Katie Reiland led the team in the kill department with 12. She also recorded four blocks, while Emily Toledo recorded 11 kills, three blocks and three aces.
Katie Olson dropped 11 kills and dished out four digs, while Brenna McDonald had eight kills, six digs and two aces despite of a twisted ankle.
Sam Foster led the 49ers with 36 assists.
Yuba college's final game will be at Mendocino on Tuesday, before the postseason seedings meeting next Saturday.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Yuba 80, Porterville 49
In San Francisco — The 49ers began their season with a resounding victory at the prestigous College of San Francisco Tournament.
Yuba held Porterville to just two field goals and 15 points total in the first half.
Jaysen Williams led the 49ers, scoring 16 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and recording two blocks — all off the bench.
Achoki Moikabu finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, Yev Dyachenko scored 12 points and Akachi Okugo had eight points and eight assists.
The 49ers face off against perennial power San Francisco today.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Redwoods 66, Yuba 50
In Sacramento — The 49ers dropped back-to-back games at the Cosumnes River College Tournament to begin their 2012 campaign.
After suffering a 95-49 loss to Cosumnes River on Thursday, Yuba fell to Redwoods on Friday.
Tiffany Rhoades led the 49ers with 18 points, Chloe Pereiro added 16 and Cori Schatz had nine rebounds.
Tiffany Rasmussen finished with 14 points against Cosumnes River College.
