PREP ROUNDUP: YC girls get first TCC win

RV rolls Natomas; Marysville girls win

The Yuba City High girls basketball team picked up its first Tri-County Conference win of the season with a 63-34 victory over Pioneer at Honker Gym on Wednesday night.

Tiffany Friend led Yuba City with 19 points and Anyssa Bell added 10 points for the Honkers (4-13, 1-1).

Yuba City will look to carry the momentum into a TCC matchup on Friday at Woodland.

River Valley 67, Natomas 36

In Sacramento — The Falcons blasted the Nighthawks behind another solid effort from senior Taylor Massengale, who scored 18 points to go with 13 rebounds, four blocks and four steals.

Ashlie Millington added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Falcons, while Aleqse Hawkins picked up nine points and seven assists.

River Valley (12-6, 2-0) will host Inderkum on Friday night in a game with early TCC title implications.

Marysville 65, Mesa Verde 55

In Marysville — Bayshta Aguila dropped in 21 points to lead the Indians to a Golden Empire League victory over the Mavericks at Lesta Joubert Gymnasium.

Holly Tarr added a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Khaleelia Gibson tacked on 13 points for Marysville (9-11, 1-2).

WRESTLING

Sutter 70, Winters 12

In Winters — The Huskies picked up eight victories via pin as they cruised to a Butte View League dual meet victory.

Leading the charge was senior heavyweight Reid Melani, who improved to 16-0 on the season with his victory by pin.

Other Huskies to pick up pins were Julian Kim (120), Tyler Anderson (138), Chase Miles (154), Jacob Gildea (160), Riley Vickner (170), Chase Gildea (182) and Mike Thompson (195)

Alex Ingram moved to 18-2 on the year with a major decision victory in the 145-pound bout.

The Huskies also picked up three wins by forfeit.

Orland 50, Wheatland 24

In Wheatland — The defending BVL champions were just too much for the Pirates.

Andrew Gonzales (heavyweight), Austin Shinn (138) and Kalan Hastey each picked up pins for Wheatland, which moved to 1-1 in BVL play.

Pioneer 58, River Valley 13

In Yuba City — The Falcons were roughed up by the Patriots in a TCC dual meet at Falcon Gymnasium.

Jordan Davis (197) was a bright spot for the Falcons with a 12-0 major decision victory.

Harlan Shelton won in a 9-8 decision at 108 and Carlos Robles (115) picked up a 13-8 decision. Logan Morace completed the scoring for RV with a 6-5 decision.

The Falcons fell to 0-3 in TCC action.

Chance Perez (138) and Chris Hansen (152) were both victorious with pins in the JV match.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

Pioneer 57, Yuba City 50, OT

In Yuba City — Jordan Coxe scored 14 points and Alyssa Ashburn chipped in with 10, but the Honkers (6-8, 0-2) fell to the Patriots in overtime in a TCC game.

Marysville 42, Mesa Verde 26

In Marysville — Morgan Lake tallied 14 points and four rebounds, and Hanna Bailey added eight points and three steals to propel the Indians (8-11, 2-1) to a GEL win.

Colusa 46, Quincy 26

In Colusa — Sally Loeza scored 18 points and Mollie Townzen added 10 in the MVL victory for Colusa (11-4, 2-0) on Tuesday.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

River Valley 62, Natomas 48

In Yuba City — Rohin Basi led the Falcons with 17 points and Devin Cates added 14 more as RV moved to 2-0 in the TCC with a win over the Nighthawks on Tuesday.

Karanvir Takhar chipped in 10 for the Falcons (8-6).

Yuba City 71, Pioneer 23

In Yuba City — Angel Hernandez scored 21 points to help power the Honkers to a TCC victory on Tuesday.

John Horn scored 13 and Emari Love added 12 for the Honkers (9-9, 2-0).

Sutter 52, Wheatland 38

In Wheatland — Jordan Miller led the Huskies with 15 points in a BVL-opening victory on Tuesday night.

Lucas Romo added 13 points and Tyler Quillin tacked on 11 for Sutter (7-10, 1-0).

Mesa Verde 45, Marysville 30

In Marysville — Matthew Butcher scored 10 points for the Indians (3-14, 0-2) in a GEL loss to the Mavericks on Tuesday.

FROSH BOYS BASKETBALL

Yuba City 85, Pioneer 44

In Woodland — Ryan Besso scored 24 points as the Honkers blasted the Patriots in TCC action on Tuesday.

Daniel Claydon and Cameron Eden both scored 12 points for Yuba City (11-10, 2-0) and Matt Lara dished out 10 assists.

FROSH GIRLS BASKETBALL

Yuba City 50, Pioneer 12

In Yuba City — Gabby Johnson scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Honkers (3-6, 2-0) to a blowout victory over the Patriots in a TCC contest.
