LOCAL ROUNDUP: Moikobu, Williams power Yuba past Alameda
Woes continue for YC boys, Thomas lifts Blazers past Dixon
The Yuba College men's basketball team inched closer to a seventh straight Bay Valley Conference title on Wednesday night with an 81-70 victory over the College of Alameda in Linda.
The 49ers led by 19 points at halftime, but the Cougars made a game of it in the second half to cut the lead to seven before Yuba answered with a run of its own to pull away.
"We kind of thought we'd run right through them and they kept coming at us," Yuba coach Doug Cornelius said. "Usually we're a second-half team, but we didn't play well in the second half tonight. I don't know what was going on."
Achoki Moikobu led the way with 17 points and six assists, while Jaysen Williams came up big off the bench with 12 points and 17 rebounds.
Yev Dyachenko scored 14 points, Darrell Polee finished with 10 points and Akachi Okugo added seven points and seven assists for the No. 11-ranked 49ers, who improved to 17-6 overall and a perfect 11-0 in the BVC with the win.
The victory was also Yuba's 40th consecutive conference win dating back to the 2009-10 season.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Laney 65, Yuba 56
The 49ers led by 11 points in the first half before faltering late in a loss to first-place Laney.
Taylor Rasmussen scored 19 points and Chloe Pereiro added 16 to lead the way for Yuba.
"It was a real good effort," Niner coach Steve Sain said. "We battled and led throughout against a good team."
BOYS BASKETBALL
Woodland 61, Yuba City 55
In Woodland — Travis Blas, Taylor Elkins and Jamie Smith scored 11 points each, but the Honkers fell short late in a Tri-County Conference loss to the Wolves.
Kyle Turnquest added nine points and Louis Mowers finished with eight in the loss for Yuba City (10-14, 2-6).
Lindhurst 75, Dixon 65
In Olivehurst — Cedrick Thomas scored 17 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and dished out seven assists to help the Blazers beat Dixon in a Golden Empire League game.
Devin Ward led Lindhurst (13-13, 4-5) in scoring with 23 points. He also grabbed five rebounds, along with Hugo Arroyo, who finished with 11 points. Alex Yang also contributed 18 points.
West Campus 58, Marysville 48
In Sacramento — Chu Lor led the Indians with 16 points, and despite outscoring the Warriors by 11 points in the second half, Marysville fell in a GEL contest.
After digging themselves in a hole early by playing poorly in the first half, the Indians (5-21, 0-9) played their best half of the season in the second half, according to coach Stan Easter.
"I was real proud of my guys," he said. "They played great defense in that second half."
Maxwell 72, Williams 50
In Williams — George Barajas scored 21 points, Isaiah Martinez added 11 and the Panthers cruised past Williams in a Mid-Valley League game.
Santiago Gonzalez chipped in nine points for Maxwell (14-5, 7-0).
WRESTLING
Sutter 55, Wheatland 15
In Sutter — The Huskies rolled the Pirates with five pins and two decisions in the two teams' final Butte View League dual meet of the season.
Brandon Gildemeister (108 pounds) and Alex Ingram (154) each won by decision, while Julian Kim (115), Hunter Minton (134), Zach Bell-Matthews (140), Chase Miles (147) and Jacob Gildea (162) each won by pin.
Sutter will host the BVL championships on Saturday.
Ryan Franken (120) and Robert Wilson (126) both won by pin, and Andrew Gonzales (220) won by decision in quadruple overtime to lead the way for the Pirates.
JV BOYS BASKETBALL
River Valley 63, Inderkum 45
In Yuba City — Rohin Basi had a huge game for the Falcons with 32 points and 17 rebounds as River Valley defeated the Tigers in TCC play.
Devin Cates added 13 points and Sam Van Dusen scored eight points to go with 10 rebounds.
Yuba City 54, Woodland 50
In Woodland — Amari Love scored 19 points, Angel Hernandez and Parker Lowe each finished with 11 and the Honkers (13-11, 6-2) topped the Wolves in a TCC game.
Dixon 69, Lindhurst 60
In Olivehurst — Tony Raya scored 26 points and Rene Corona added 16 more as the Blazers (10-12, 4-5) dropped a GEL contest to the Rams.
West Campus 47, Marysville 42
In Sacramento — Eric Scheive recorded 25 points and 14 rebounds, but the Indians (3-19, 1-10) fell short in their GEL game against the Warriors.
FROSH BOYS BASKETBALL
Inderkum 66, River Valley 52
In Yuba City — The Falcons suffered a TCC loss and slipped to 5-17 overall and 2-4 in conference.
Jasdeep Bains scored 10 points, while Clarence Pierson and Sukhman Janda each scored seven points for the Falcons.
Yuba City 68, Woodland 41
In Woodland — Ryan Besso scored 20 points and the Honkers pounced on the Wolves in a TCC game.
Matt Lara scored 10 points and Bailey Elkins added nine points for the Honkers (15-11, 6-1).
