YUBA COLLEGE: Men's hoops squad wins 7th straight BVC title
49er women fall to Marin
It's time to make room for another banner in Yuba College's gymnasium.
The 49ers men's basketball team took down College of Marin 71-65 in Kentfield on Wednesday night to claim its seventh consecutive Bay Valley Conference championship.
Yuba (20-7, 14-1) concludes the regular season on Friday at home against Merritt College, the BVC's No. 2 team. The Niners will likely need a victory to secure a first-round home playoff game.
In Wednesday's victory, Chris Smith led Yuba with 19 points and fellow freshman Akachi Okugo added 16 points and five assists.
Gary Melvin dropped in 11 points and Jaysen Williams pulled down seven rebounds.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Marin 58, 49ers 54
In Kentfield — Taylor Rasmussen had a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to lift the 49ers past the Mariners in BVC action.
Natalya Stepanchuk totaled 14 points and Yuba City High product Chloe Pereiro tacked on 12 for the 49ers, who fell to 1-13 in conference play and 2-21 overall.
