YUBA ROUNDUP: McGill's grand slam lifts 49ers past Butte

Softball team drops a pair in Redding

The Yuba College baseball team scored five runs in the third inning and that's all the 49ers would need in a 5-4 victory over Butte College at Cowan Park in Oroville.

The big blow of that five-run third inning was a grand slam by Ethan McGill, which knocked in Christian Divelbiss, Eric Adams and Dustyn Macaluso.

Adams knocked in the 49ers' first run of the inning with a single to right field, which plated Brandon Lockwood. McGill finished 2 for 3.

Lindhurst High product Timmy Zucco picked up the victory on the mound by going seven innings with five strikeouts and just three earned runs allowed.

Zucco threw 123 pitches and overcame some command issues as he hit four batters and walked two more.

The Roadrunners scored three runs off of Zucco in the bottom of the first inning and added one more run courtesy of a Yuba error in the sixth.

Michael Beck notched his third save by pitching two scoreless innings of relief.

The 49ers (5-4) snapped a three-game losing streak and will host Butte today at 2 p.m. at Appeal-Democrat Park.

Yuba drops doubleheader

In Redding — The Yuba College softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Shasta College.

In game one, the 49ers fell 3-2 to Shasta, despite a tremendous effort by starting pitcher Rachel Quinn.

The sophomore right-hander struck out eight and allowed just five hits in the loss as Yuba committed a costly error in the sixth inning to let the go-ahead run score.

Quinn was also 2 for 3 at the plate and Jacky Tanner finished 2 for 4.

Yuba (6-7) dropped its second game to Sierra College 10-3.

Dylanne Brown clubbed a two-run homer and Tanner went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored for the 49ers, who are back in action on Feb. 28 at College of San Mateo.
