A barn dance and barbecue fundraiser benefiting FOCUS: Hands Helping Children is set in Biggs.

Grimes
Ladies host 50th anniversary event
Grimes Ladies Aid is hosting its 50th annual dinner and bazaar at Grand Island Elementary School, 551 Leven St., Grimes.
Set at 5 p.m. Nov. 7, the all-you-can-eat turkey and ham dinner also includes a bazaar booth, a country store with local produce and baked goods and the chance to win a quilt made by Beverly Thayer.
In addition, the Grimes Civic Association is sponsoring a raffle table, with proceeds going toward maintenance of the Grimes Scout Cabin.
Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for children 6 to 13 years; and free to children 5 years and younger.

Updated seniors guide available
An updated version of "Seniors and the Law, A Guide for Maturing Californians" is available free of charge at Senior Information Assistance, 725 D St., Marysville.
Published by the California State Bar, the guide contains information on issues directly affecting seniors.

Democrats host majority leader
State Senate Majority Leader Dean Florez was the guest speaker at the Sutter County Democratic Central Committee second annual Spaghetti Dinner.
The event was held Oct. 18 at the Plaza Room in Yuba City.
Florez spoke on various topics including water allocation and ways to streamline legislative processes.
Speakers also included candidates Christine Billeci, 3rd state Assembly; Chris Parker, Board of Equalization District 2; and James Reed, 4th state Senate.

Activity Center stages bazaar
The Marysville Adult Activity Center is hosting its 33rd annual Arts and Crafts Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 7 at the First Presbyterian Church, Sampson Street and Rideout Way, in Marysville.
The event features Christmas gifts and craft items along with homemade baked goods and a rummage corner.
Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a raffle held at 2 p.m.

Senior seminar planned Thursday
The 10 most common concerns of local seniors are part of a Seniors in Sutter County Needs Assessment Seminar in Yuba City.
Beginning at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, the free seminar is at the Yuba City Senior Center, 777 Ainsley Ave. The results stem from recent surveys and interviews by the Area 4 Agency on Aging and Sutter County Commission.
The workshop was originally scheduled Oct. 22.

A luncheon hosted by the Meridian Farm Women is set at noon Nov. 7 at the Veterans Hall on Fourth Street in Meridian.

Kiwanis plans Monte Carlo night
Tickets are available for the fifth annual "Monte Carlo Night, A Black and White Affair" hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Yuba City.
The event is at 6 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Veterans Hall, 1425 Veterans Memorial Drive, Yuba City. Tickets are $35 each.
The evening includes hors d'oeuvres, no-host cocktails, jazz musician Pete Baker and 28 gaming tables led by professional dealers.

Quilt guild show to run two days
The Mountain Quilt Guild's eighth Annual Quilt Show is set from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 7 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 8 at the Ponderosa Community Center, 17103 Ponderosa Way, Brownsville.
The two-day event also includes food, the group's Country Store, a raffle and sewing-related items are for sale.
Admission is $5 per person. Funds will be used to purchase fabric to make quilts for organizations that help those in need.

T.J. Roethe, author of "Just In Case...Everything a Family Should Know," is the special guest speaker at the upcoming Yuba City/Marysville Christian Women's Club luncheon.

Opera group receives funds
The Yuba Sutter Regional Arts Council received a one-time $11,000 grant from the California Arts Council and California Department of Justice.
The grant supports the 2009-2010 season of the Borgamaria Lyric Opera.
Funds are to be used to provide discounted or free music performances and underwrite school performances of opera production.

History group sets Buttes hikes
The Yuba Historical Society is starting its fall hike program in the Sutter Buttes with two hikes from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 8 and 15.
The first hike, including Cathedral Peak and Bragg Canyon, is $25 for historical society members and $35 for non-members; and the second hike, "Bird in the Buttes," is $15 for members and $25, non-members.
