Gift, crafts fair under way today
A drawing for a mini laptop computer is part of the Meridian Holiday Gift and Craft Sale at the Meridian Veterans Hall.
Slated from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, the event also includes different foods to purchase including pulled pork sandwiches, chili and soup.

Rebekah officer visits local club
Karolinne Livingston, president of the Rebekah Assembly 2009-2010 will attend an official district meeting of the local Rebekah lodge in Yuba City.
The meeting is at 7:30 p.m. with a potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday at the Minnehaha Rebekah Lodge No. 133, 290 Percy Ave.

Holiday craft, gift event scheduled
The 23rd annual Colusa Holiday Craft Faire and Gift Show is set Nov. 21 and 22 at the Colusa County Fairgrounds, with free admission and parking.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The fairgrounds are at 1303 10th St. in Colusa.

Sutter Buttes
Historical society leading hikes
The Yuba Historical Society is leading hikes from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. the next two Saturdays in the Sutter Buttes.
Hikes include, Nov. 21, Around Cat Rock Loop; and Nov. 28, "Ridge Walker Delight." Both include information on the buttes' geology, biology and history.
Cost ranges from $15 to $35. Registration is needed.

Ornaments, gift baskets and candles are among the items for sale at this weekend's Christmas in November at the Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds.

Forcing bulbs is garden club topic
Bulb forcing is the topic of the Sutter Buttes Garden Club's general meeting Nov. 24 in Yuba City.
Slated at 6:30 p.m., the meeting is at the Community Memorial Museum of Sutter County, 1333 Butte House Road.
Speakers include Cindy Davis and Earlene Eisley-Freeman. Those attending are asked to bring a flower for the community bouquet.

DAR chapter slates meeting
Feather River Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution meets at 11 a.m. Friday at the Greater Oroville Family Resource Center in Oroville.

Home decoration and design is the program for the next meeting of the American Association of University Women.

Monica Noble, design consultant from the Home Depot, and her assistant, Julia Hamilton, will talk about maintenance, remodeling with energy efficient features, design and decor.

Turkey Trot event planned Nov. 21
Registration is under way for the 2009 Turkey Trot Family 5K Run/walk hosted by Hands of Hope family center.
The event is set Nov. 21 at the River Valley High School stadium, 801 El Margarita Road, Yuba City. Registration starts at 8 a.m., with the run/walk at 9 a.m.
The fee is $20 for adults and $10 for children 14 years and under.
Forms can be picked up in Yuba City at any Starbucks, at Yuba City and River Valley high schools and the Yuba City Racquet Club; and in Marysville at the Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce office.

Cookie decorating classes offered
Cookie decorating classes with The Cookie Tree are planned through the Yuba City Parks and Recreation Department.
The program is for children ages 6 to 14 years to create, eat and share cookies.

• Dec. 12 — 9 to 10 a.m., gingerbread houses; fee, $30.

Book signing set for Nov. 22
A book signing is set for "The McIntosh Turtles and the Mysterious Pool," written by Ethel Padgett of the Candy Box in Marysville in tribute to the business founders Irene and Floyd McIntosh.
The signing and book launch is from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 22 at Amicus Books Literary Arts Center, 413 D St., Marysville.
Padgett and illustrator Shawn Williams both will attend the event.

Bordsen pumpkin tops in contest
The grand-prize winner in the fourth annual Pumpkin Growing Contest Oct. 31 at Sutter Orchard Supply in Yuba City was Keith Bordsen. His entry weighed in at 972 pounds.
The event was co-sponsored by the Yuba-Sutter Farm Bureau.
Other winners included:
• Junior division — first, Cade Stafford, 89 pounds; second, Quinn Stafford, 48 pounds; third, Erin Larson, 18 pounds.
• Intermediate — first, Juliana Capaul, 130 pounds; second, Elizabeth Schmidl, 101 pounds; third, Tim Martinez, 94 pounds.
• Advanced — first, Alan Nader, 423 pounds; second, Brianne Poole, 35 pounds.

Class celebrates 60th anniversary
Members of the Marysville High School class of 1949 met for their 60th-year reunion dinner Oct. 10, followed by a brunch the next day.
Jacqueline Day Booth of Loveland, Colo., was recognized as traveling the farthest to the reunion.
Guests included Jane Pope Roberts, a former music teacher.
The event included the general chairman, Bob Hight; program committee, Hight, Loise Barnett Sullivan and Kay Barnes; decorations chair, Frances Pleasant Montgomery; invitations, Diana Swift Nagler; and planning committee, Carl Patton, Dick Bryant, Jim Goodman and Ed Goodman.

Speaker takes second in district
Joyce Pope from Peachbowl Dawnbreakers Toastmasters Club, No. 1819 in Yuba City, placed second in the District 39 Division C 2009 Humorous Speech Contest held Sept. 19.
Michael Singleton from Redding Evening Toastmasters Club, No. 197, placed first in the division contest and will compete in the District 39 Humorous Speech Contest Nov. 21 in Sacramento.
District 39, with more than 170 clubs, includes Division C — from Sutter County to the Oregon border — and the coast region to the Nevada border, and Sacramento and Stockton to the south, Vacaville and Tracy to the west and Reno, Nev. to the east.

Refuge official wins merit award
Greg Mensik, deputy manager of the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex, was awarded the Department of the Interior Meritorious Service Award in September.
A part of the Colusa National Wildlife Refuge since 1983, first as a refuge biologist, then supervisory biologist and later as deputy refuge manager, he has had a 32-year career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and plans to retire in the spring.
During the award ceremony, Mensik was recognized for his active leadership in community groups, irrigation boards, rice and wetland habitat committees, and Fish and Game Advisory committees.

Wheatland girl chosen in contest
Taylor Sue Lynn Bentley, daughter of Catherine and Terry Bentley of Wheatland, was selected by Barbizon of Sacramento as a contestant at the International Modeling and Talent Association conference Jan. 4 to 9 in Los Angeles.
She is a sixth-grade student at Bear River Middle School.
A graduate of the Barbizon Modeling School, Sacramento, she was fourth runner-up, photogenic, in the 2008 National American Miss, Miss California Jr. Pre-teen Pageant and was showcased in the International Performing Arts Conference in June.

Y-S dancers head for 'Nutcracker'
Eight students of Studio B Academy of Classical Ballet in Yuba City are slated to dance with the Sacramento Ballet Company's production of "The Nutcracker" in December.
Slated to perform are Angie Gomer, Sarah Cabigas, Mary Catherine Burky, Mary Ramon, Katie Blair, and Macy Smotherman, all of Yuba City; and Caitlyn Perry and Grace Perry, both of Marysville.
Performances are Dec. 10 to 23 at the Community Center Theater, corner of 13th and L streets in Sacramento.

Emblem Club seeks vendors
Vendors are sought to participate in the 13th annual Emblem Club Craft Fair at the Marysville Elks Lodge.
Table rentals are $20 each or $35 for two, with all proceeds benefiting the club's scholarship program for local high school seniors.
The craft fair is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 5.

Craft fair planned over 2 weekends
Creations by Pauline Fillmore's 11th annual craft fair is planned for two weekends at 2430 Kola Court in Live Oak.

Items will include scarves, table linens, wall hangings and food.

Women voters seek members
Plans are under way to establish a chapter of the League of Women Voters in the Yuba-Sutter area.
A minimum of 20 women are needed to participate to establish the chapter.

Yuba College worker benefit set
A group of Yuba College employees is hosting a spaghetti feed fundraising dinner to benefit the 56 Yuba Community College District classified staff who are scheduled to be laid off in January.
The dinner is at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at the First United Methodist Church, 730 D St., Marysville.
Tickets are $7 per person. Cash, food and other donations will also be accepted.

Native Daughters sponsor can drive
Native Daughters of the Golden West and the Sutter Lions Club are sponsoring a holiday canned food drive in Sutter.
Organized by the Brittan Elementary School California Junior Scholarship Federation and leadership students, the drive is open until Dec. 15.
Donations sought include canned food, fruit, cash and gifts. Items will be collected by the Lions Club and distributed to needy children of Sutter in time for the holidays.

Lions seek old eyeglasses
Old eyeglasses are being collected for the Lions Club "Recycle for Sight" program at the Yuba City Police Department community service office in the Yuba Sutter Mall in Yuba City.
Volunteers are accepting prescription and reading glasses, sunglasses and plastic- and metal-framed glasses through Dec. 31.
Children's glasses are especially needed.
A donation box can be found in the service office, across from String's restaurant at the mall's east door.
