In the classic tale of Camelot, the Magic Theatre will introduce audiences to a wizard and his young protégé — who is destined someday to become the king of England — in "The Sword and the Stone," playing Saturdays through Oct. 27 in Yuba City.
"'The Sword and the Stone' starts out with a very young Arthur (Joey Lafnear)," said director Anthony Dost.
Arthur is being raised by a guardian, Sir Ector, whose son Kai (Blake Rider) is older than Arthur and therefore in line to become a knight while Arthur is in line to become Kai's squire. "So Arthur kind of resigns himself to a life of being in Kai's shadow," Dost said.
One day, Arthur meets Merlin, who shows him that there's more to his life — that he's destined to do greater things, Dost said.
Merlin shows Arthur that there is real magic to be found in nature and the world around him — not "abra-cadabra" magic, but instead the magic found through the elements: earth, wind, fire and water, Dost said.
"Arthur learns what the real magic is and that it's all around him. It's being kind to others, it's that type of real magic and how he can influence other people," he said.
The cast includes Andrew Hayes, Lily Long and Dillon Ruhl.
"There's some sword-fighting — Arthur gets to sword-fight with pretty much everyone in the show. There's some laughter, there are magic tricks — it's going to be a great show for everybody. It will appeal to both boys and girls," Dost said.
"If you want to just sit back and watch an entertaining show with lots of humor and action, some really good sword fights and just see these kids have a great time, this is going to be a great family-friendly show for everybody," he added.
"The cast has been excited to put this show on and have enjoyed a lot of the aspects of getting ready. They are very enthusiastic, and they've been having a lot of fun," Dost said.
"Come in and join us for a great Saturday afternoon."
