Yuba County man arrested in attack with screwdriver, rock

A Yuba County man was jailed Tuesday, accused of attacking his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend with a screwdriver and rock last week.

Joshua A. Adams, 26, was booked into the Yuba County Jail on $30,000 bail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. He was no longer in custody Wednesday night.

Yuba County sheriff's deputies arrested Adams around 11 a.m. at his home on La Porte Road in Challenge, according to booking records.

"We knew who he was and located him (Tuesday) and made the arrest," Undersheriff Jerry Read said.

Deputies said Adams attacked Floyd E. Hawkins, 25, around 9 p.m. Feb. 25 outside a home in the 17000 block of Hummingbird Lane in Brownsville. Investigators said Adams was jealous of Hawkins' relationship with Sara Smith of Brownsville, who previously dated Adams.

Hawkins stepped outside the woman's house to investigate a barking dog and was struck in the head with a large rock. He suffered a 1-inch cut, authorities said.

Adams and Hawkins struggled for a short time before Adams tried several times to stab Hawkins with a screwdriver. Hawkins suffered several minor cuts on his arms, the Sheriff's Department said.

Adams ran away after the scuffle, authorities said.

Yuba County prosecutors were reviewing the case on Wednesday.
