Manslaughter conviction upheld

The 3rd District Court of Appeal has upheld the conviction of a Yuba County man who killed a bicyclist while driving under the influence of drugs in May 2009.

Andrew Louis Cornett, 25, pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter of 32-year-old Lucinda Gillis and was sentenced in Yuba County Superior Court to 10 years and eight months in prison. Prosecutors said he would have to serve at least half the sentence.

In a three-page opinion issued Monday, the appeal court ruled Cornett will receive an extra 92 days off for good conduct in keeping with a penal code change that took effect Jan. 25.

Hallwood

New steel cross will be dedicated

A new steel cross planted in a concrete foundation will be dedicated Sunday during the 10:30 a.m. service at Hallwood Community Church of the Nazarene, replacing the church's 10-foot wooden cross stolen in May.

The cross, about 12 feet tall and 6 feet wide and so heavy a crane was needed to install it said Pastor Gil Morales, is in front of the church at 2825 Highway 20 in Hallwood.

It is lighted at night and can be seen at a great distance, he added.

The replacement cross was due to the generous donations from the local community, both financially and by volunteering to help install it, Morales said.
