Beale airman falls asleep at the wheel, hits utility pole
A Beale Air Force Base airman suffered minor injuries this morning after falling asleep at the wheel, hitting a utility pole and colliding with a parked car.
He was driving in the 400 block of Garden Highway, on his way home after working a night shift.
Sgt. Steve Thornton of the Yuba City Police Department said the driver was transported to Rideout Regional Medical Center after he suffered minor burns to his hands when the airbag deployed.
Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor.
Garden Highway was closed in both directions as Pacific Gas & Electric Co. crews worked on the damaged utility pole.
