    Englebright control burn

A control burn is planned today and Friday at the Richards Ranch north of Englebright Reservoir, under the direction of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit.

The fire, starting at 8 a.m. and continuing into late afternoon, is to reduce overgrowth in the vegetation and provide a fire break that can be used in the future.

Smoke will be visible from Highway 20 and in several communities including Dobbins, Oregon House, Smartsville, Penn Valley and Lake Wildwood. Smoke may also be present during the weekend.

Man orders dog to attack deputy

A Yuba County man was arrested Wednesday after ordering his dog to attack a deputy, a Sheriff's Department spokeswoman said.

After the department received a request to check on the welfare of Edward Boozell, 52, the deputy went to Boozell's house in the 14300 block of Oregon Peak Road at about 2 p.m. Tuesday. Boozell told the deputy to leave and ordered the dog to attack, said Melanie Oakes.

The deputy was not injured and responded by firing a Taser at the dog and at Boozell, who was not affected because he was wearing a thick jacket. The deputy then left, Oakes said.

When deputies returned later, Boozell ran into woods near his house and could not be located despite a search by a California Highway Patrol helicopter and K-9 units, she said.

Boozell was found about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Bullards Bar Marina, where he works, and arrested on suspicion of assaulting an officer and resisting arrest.
