    Farm duo plead not guilty

Gavrilo and Jeanne Spaich pleaded not guilty Friday to federal conspiracy and fraud charges.

The Spaiches — father and daughter — appeared in Sacramento before U.S. Magistrate Judge Edmund F. Brennan, who released Jeanne Spaich on a $50,000 unsecured bond and Gavrilo Spaich on a $100,000 unsecured bond.

They were ordered back to court Oct. 21.

They were named Thursday in a 13-count indictment.

Gavrilo Spaich was one of the principals of Spaich Brothers Inc., a prominent Live Oak prune grower. The company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2001; Spaich filed for bankruptcy three years later.

    Foothills crash injures pair

A two-car crash Friday in the Yuba County foothills injured two drivers, one of them seriously.

The vehicles collided at about 4:30 p.m. on Highway 20 east of the Parks Bar bridge, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 2000 Dodge Stratus was headed west when its driver went into the path of an eastbound 1997 Subaru Legacy. The Dodge swerved onto the south shoulder, then the north shoulder and finally the south shoulder again before striking the Subaru head-on, the CHP reported.

A 52-year-old woman from Boulder, Colo., at the wheel of the Legacy suffered major injuries and was flown by helicopter to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, the agency said. The driver of the Stratus, a 24-year-old Yuba City man, sustained minor injuries and was treated at Rideout Memorial Hospital.

Names of the drivers were unavailable Friday night.

    BACK TO SCHOOL?
The new GI Bill benefits vary from state to state depending on tuition and fees, replacing the previous flat stipend, and also includes a formula for private college assistance. Do you agree with this approach?
Yes, it allows veterans more choices of where to attend college.
I like it, but the private school policy is flawed in California.
    I think it's too generous.
