Yuba County man accused in string of Bullards Bar-area thefts

A Penn Valley man was jailed on Monday and more than $10,000 in stolen property was recovered in connection with thefts in the Bullards Bar area along the Yuba River.

John Schrecongost was booked into the Yuba County Jail on suspicion of grand theft, petty theft, receiving stolen property and taking a vehicle without owner's consent. He was in custody Tuesday with bail set at $25,000.

"Items from other thefts were also located in the search," sheriff's Lt. Damon Gil said Tuesday.

Schrecongost, 27, was arrested at his home in the 1100 block of Pinnacle Lane, Yuba County Sheriff Steve Durfor said in a statement.

A subsequent search of his home turned up a stolen vehicle, a stolen outboard motor and items taken from a vehicle burglary.

All items had been reported stolen from the Bullards Bar area since June 20.

Deputies also found additional suspected stolen property from unrelated thefts.

"He is a suspect in all of these reports," Gil said.

Investigators had been looking into a string of thefts beginning June 20, when a boat motor was taken in the Dark Day upper parking lot at Bullards Bar.

Two weeks later, a vehicle was burglarized and several items were taken.

Deputies also received several reports of gasoline thefts around the same time.

The vehicle was reported stolen July 12.

Detectives were also looking into reports of stolen credit cards that turned up in Grass Valley.
