Bomb threat clears building on Chico State campus
The Butte County bomb squad swept at least one building at Chico State University on Wednesday after the university receieved a bomb threat.
According to university spokesman Joe Wills, an anonymous call was made to the Wildcat Recreation Center about 7:20 a.m. saying that a bomb would go off in the Student Services Center during the day.
The center, at 600 W. Second St. near Ivy Street, was closed, as was the Bell Memorial Union.
The Butte County bomb squad brought a bomb-sniffing dog to the building, and faculty, staff and students were advised to wait in the university library.
The university sent out an automated phone message, text alerts and Twitter alerts to notify students and employees to avoid the Student Services Center and the area was taped off.
Nothing was found, and the Student Services Center and BMU reopened a little after 11 a.m.
University President Paul Zingg addressed the crowd in the library about 9 a.m. He said the building likely would remain closed a couple of hours, adding good-naturedly that it was warm in the library and with plenty to read.
