A tornado touched down five miles northeast of Yuba City at about 5:40 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. There was no word of any injuries or property damage.

Late-season storms brought periods of heavy rain, hail the size of pennies, thunder and lightning. The weather service issued the weather alert at 3:24 p.m. and extended the tornando warning several times to 6:45 p.m. The severe weather alert was in effect until 8 p.m.

Because of the threat of rain, Yuba City Unified School District moved all eighth grade promotion ceremonies inside Wednesday.

The five-day forecast calls for a 20 percent chance of more rain today and Friday during the day, and a 50 percent chance of rain Friday night, which is graduation night for several area high schools.

There's also a chance of more rain over the weekend. Highs will only be in the mid- to high 60s and overnight lows will drop into the 40s.

The late-season storm should bring snow to elevations down to 5,000 feet.
