The charter school that will provide college prep academics — and enroll many students from now-closed Notre Dame School in Marysville — won unanimous approval at a 15-minute meeting Tuesday of trustees for the Marysville Joint Unified School District.
New Day Charter School plans to locate at the First Presbyterian Church in Marysville — but if that arrangement is delayed will be able to use five classrooms of the Marysville school district.
"It's definitely a good thing for New Day and our district," superintendent Gay Todd said of the new K-8 charter school. "It's a population of students we have historically not served."
District trustees will serve as the governing board for the charter school.
Teachers from Notre Dame who begin at New Day are expected to receive about $10,000-a-year raises as they begin work for the public school district rather than the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento.
Paul Broughton, who was principal at Notre Dame, will serve in that same role at the charter school. Broughton was assistant principal at Marysville High School from 1990-95.
Notre Dame School closed in June after 152 years in operation, citing declining enrollment. School officials said 69 students attended the Catholic school before it shut down.
A total of 111 students have enrolled in New Day Charter, Marysville Joint Unified trustee Glenn Harris said at Tuesday's school board meeting.
"This is going to be a great addition," trustee Sandy Fonley said of the school.
