SUTTER COUNTY

Suspended license sting snares 2

A sting operation resulted in misdemeanor citations for a Yuba City woman and a Lincoln man for driving with suspended licenses shortly after appearing in Sutter County Superior Court for the same offense, according to Yuba City police.

Arrested and cited were Jennifer Lynn Canning, 24, of the 800 block of Almond Street, Yuba City, and Marshal Ranger, 45, of Lincoln, said Sgt. Brian Baker.

Canning and Ranger were followed after leaving court. Their vehicles were impounded, said Baker.

The sting was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.

YUBA CITY

Corporation yard to get solar panels

Solar panels will soon be coming to Yuba City's corporation yard.

The City Council approved a resolution approving the specifications for the solar panel project, which should cost about $226,000, and authorized an advertisement for bids. Funding is coming from a $574,700 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant that is also paying for part of the project to install solar panels at the senior center and a heating, ventilation and air conditioning project at six city facilities.

The corporation yard solar panels are the last of the projects to be funded by the city's share of the federal grant.

SUTTER COUNTY

Medical pot ID card hearing set

Sutter County residents soon can weigh in on whether the county should issue identification cards for medical marijuana users.

A public hearing on the issue is slated for the Board of Supervisors meeting at 7 p.m. April 6. A yes vote by the board would bring the county's Health Division into the state Department of Public Health's ID card program, with applicants paying a county and state fee for identification.

Voters in 1996 passed Proposition 215, which defied the federal ban on pot by allowing its use and cultivation with a physician's approval. Sutter has resisted launching ID programs for cannabis users, although Yuba County began one in 2008.

MARYSVILLE

Peach Festival cut to only 2 days

The Marysville City Council voted Tuesday to revert back to a two-day schedule for the 2010 Peach Festival.

Last year's festival was a three-day event, but personnel costs for security were more than the city can afford this year, according to Shannon Greathouse-Jacobsen, the city's special events coordinator.

The 2010 festival is expected to cost the city $5,000-$7,000. It is scheduled to take place in July.

SACRAMENTO

Former prosecutor hired by governor

A former Sutter County prosecutor is among a group of new hires by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Tom Dyer was appointed legislative coordinator of the state Department of Personnel Administration, the governor's office announced last week. The 36-year-old Sacramento resident had served as labor relations counsel for the department for three years joining the Department of Social Services last year as its staff counsel.

Dyer was a deputy district attorney under Sutter County D.A. Carl Adams in 2004-05.

Dyer's annual compensation will be $86,352.

SUTTER COUNTY

Passport Day coming March 27

A Sutter County event next week will help residents apply for and renew their U.S. passports.

The Clerk-Recorder's Office will sponsor Passport Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 27 at its office, 433 Second St. in Yuba City.

Visitors can apply for adult and minor passports by bringing two identical photographs of 2 inches by 2 inches; a certified birth or naturalization certificate or an expired passport; and, for adults, a valid driver's license or other picture identification.

Those younger than 16 seeking to renew a passport must bring a birth certificate as well as their expired passport.

Photo service will be available on-site.

Fees are split between the U.S. State Department and clerk-recorder. Adult passports cost $75 to the former and $25 to the latter, while the charges for a minor's passport are $60 and $25.

The event is part of the nationwide Passport Day in the USA, the State Department's annual outreach campaign.

For more information, call the Clerk-Recorder's Office at 822-7134.
