Linda
Burned classroom demolition gets OK
Emergency contracts to demolish classrooms damaged by fire at the closed Alicia Intermediate School won approval Tuesday by trustees for the Marysville Joint Unified School District.
The demolition involves six fire-damaged classrooms at the school in Linda. The work is expected to be completed before the end of 2010.
Demolition of the rest of the buildings awaits state review, said Marysville Joint Unified officials. They noted a similar state review was necessary before demolition last year of W.T. Ellis Continuation School in Linda at Hammonton-Smartville and Brophy roads.
Sutter County
Woman sentenced for embezzlement
A 31-year-old Colusa woman was sentenced Monday in Sutter County Superior Court to two years in prison after pleading no contest to embezzling from her Yuba City employer.
Elizabeth Ann Carvalho, of the 500 block of Ware Avenue, was arrested Jan. 28 on suspicion of forgery and embezzlement of more than $10,000 while working at Watkins Heating and Air Conditioning in the 1700 block of Blevin Road.
Yuba City police said Carvalho forged company checks to pay personal bills while working as the company's bookkeeper. The forgery charge was dropped as part of a plea agreement, according to the Sutter County District Attorney's Office.

DUI enforcement this weekend
Special DUI enforcement crackdowns are scheduled Friday and Saturday nights in Yuba City.
Both patrols start at 7 p.m. within the city limits.
The program to crack down on driving under the influence is conducted by the Yuba City Police Department's Traffic Education and Enforcement Unit.

SmartMeter Answer Center open
PG&E is offering a SmartMeter Answer Center for customers with questions about the program or their bill.
The center, at the PG&E office at 231 D St. in Marysville, is open from noon to 5 p.m. every Thursday through Sept. 16.

Vole control class on Saturday
A free class on how to control voles, also known as field mice, is planned at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Flower Hut Nursery in Wheatland.
The class is being presented by the Yuba County Department of Agriculture.
The Flower Hut is at 603 Fourth St.
Voles, mouse-like rodents can damage lawns, gardens, tree plantings and other plants.

Pasta fundraiser for vet building
A pasta dinner is set to replenish the Marysville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 948 and the American Legion Post 42 building fund.
Sponsored by the Marysville Elks Lodge, the family-style meal is at 6 p.m. Sept. 24 at the lodge, 920 D St., Marysville. A cash bar will be available at 5 p.m.
Donations requested are $5 per person. Tickets are available at the lodge office from 1:30 — 5 p.m. Monday to Friday or by calling 743-5134 or Roy Newman at 713-4947.
A total of $65,000 was stolen from the organization's building fund, money needed to pay the contractor who rebuilt the Veterans Hall at 17th and B streets in Marysville after a fire destroyed the building.

Constitution Day Gala on Sept. 17
"We the People" Constitution Day Gala Celebration, is set Sept. 17, hosted by the Sutter-Yuba Republican Women, Sutter and Yuba County Republican parties.
Planned from 6 — 9 p.m. at the Hillcrest Plaza Room, 210 Julie Drive in Yuba City, the event includes students reading their essays on what the constitution means to them.
Tom Del Becarro, vice chairman of the California Republican Party, is the guest speaker.
Tickets are $35 per person. Money raised will go to pay for 10,000 pocket constitutions presented to middle schools in Yuba and Sutter counties.

Kettle bell lifting classes offered
The Yuba County recreation program is offering some new classes for both the young and the less young, and also working with the local chapter of the American Red Cross to get people moving in Wheatland on Sept. 26.
Beginning in September, the program will offer a "Little Stars: Movement and Music" class on every Thursday from 9:30 a.m. — 10:30 a.m. for children 3 — 5 years old. The classes are $30 per month.
Two sets of kettle bell weightlifting classes will also begin in September, for women only on Friday mornings at 9 a.m. in Hillcrest Park in Yuba City, and co-ed offerings on Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. at POW/MIA Park in the Edgewater subdivision in Linda. The kettle bell classes are $40 per month, and attendees must bring their own kettle bell.
