Vehicle thefts down in 2009
Vehicle thefts in 2009 fell by 28.7 percent in Yuba County and 37 percent in Sutter County, according to the California Highway Patrol, which attributed the decrease to "enforcement, education and technology."
The decrease statewide over 2008 was 15.4 percent, the CHP said.
"We are very pleased with the dramatic reduction in vehicle thefts in Yuba-Sutter. Law enforcement agencies work closely and share intelligence routinely to thwart vehicle theft," said Cmdr. Jim Young of the Yuba-Sutter CHP office.
More than 88 percent of stolen vehicles were recovered last year, though the loss to Californians exceeded $1 billion, the CHP said.
The most commonly stolen vehicles are Hondas, Acuras and Nissans.

Logue bails out of Prop. 23 debate
Assemblyman Dan Logue, R-Linda, has bailed out of a debate next week against an opponent of Proposition 23, days after saying he'd debate the same person.
Logue, who wrote Proposition 23, said when asked Tuesday he'd let a representative from the state's small business community speak at what he called a forum, not a debate, next Wednesday against hedge fund manager Tom Steyer, at the monthly meeting of the Sacramento Press Club.
In the same conversation, he said he'd debate Steyer on the ballot measure if it was an actual debate, after criticizing as bizarre Steyer's challenge to debate the head of one of the oil companies that's contributed heavily to the pro-32 campaign.
Officials with the press club described the event as a debate, and reported Thursday Logue gave no reason why he wasn't participating in the event.
