Briefs: Copper thief may have burns

Yuba County

A thief who stole copper wire early Monday at a south Yuba County pumping station may have been shocked or burned in the process, Sheriff Steve Durfor said.

A witness reported hearing an explosion and seeing a large flash from the Reclamation District 784 pumping station near Road 512. Burn marks were found on a control box, Durfor said.

"Evidence suggested that someone forced entry into multiple panels and control boxes and, using a winch, they made off with more than 500 feet of copper wire," the sheriff said.

The wire was valued at $18,000, with damage to the facility estimated at $60,000.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Yuba County Sheriff's Department at 749-7777.
