Four go for Miss Corning title
The Miss Corning program on Thursday will feature four young women vying for a crown and a title.
The program is the first event leading up to the Aug. 24-25 Olive Festival, during which the newly crowned Miss Corning will reign.
Starting at 6 p.m., the program will be held at the Veterans Memorial Hall on Solano Street in Corning.
Sonya Akers, Chamber of Commerce director overseeing the event, said all of the girls are well prepared for the contest.
"We have a really nice group of contestants this year," she said.
Corning High School student Catlin Ochs is the 16-year-old daughter of Daniel Ochs and Ginny Barrett of Corning. Her sponsors are PremierWest Bank, Miracle Upholstery, Interland Business & Gifts, Valanne Cardenas and Peggy's Gifts & Thrift.
Cristal Bobadilla is the 17-year-old daughter Jorge Bobadilla and Gloria Mendoza of Corning. She is currently studying through Red Bluff Independent Studies, and her program sponsor is Corning Ford.
The daughter of Michael Profant and Michelle Varao of Corning, 16-year-old Alicia Profant, attend Corning High School. She is sponsored by Napa Auto Parts.
Monica Curiel, also attends Corning High School, and is the 16-year-old daughter of Rudy and Maria Curiel of Corning. She is sponsored La Plaza, Rancho Grande, Daisy's Ice Cream, Carniceria Mi Pueblo, Price's Pharmacy and Doree's One Cut Above.
Under the theme of "007," contestants will participate in an interview, spontaneous speaking, a skit and give a speech during Thursday's program.
The winner will receive a royal crown, sash, flowers and scholarship.
Miss Corning will play an integral part in the Olive Festival's upcoming events, featuring a parade and bed races Aug. 24 on Solano Street, and on Aug. 25 train rides, olive drop, music and entertainment, craft and food booths, cooking contest and much more at Woodson City Park.
Olive Festival T-shirts are now on sale at the Chamber of Commerce and several banks in town, and during the Olive Festival Mixer on Aug. 23 in the Bell Carter Foods breakroom.
