BRIEFS: Yuba City stabbing victim in critical condition

Appeal-Democrat

A 30-year-old Yuba City man who was stabbed in Woodland remained in critical condition Thursday at U.C. Davis Medical Center.

Woodland police Sgt. Steve Guthrie identified the victim as Mohammad Bath. He was stabbed in the back of the head, Guthrie said.

The suspected attacker, Harjiwan Singh Mann, 36, also of Yuba City, was being held in the Monroe Detention Center in Yolo County on an attempted murder charge.

Bath, a labor contractor, and Mann went to Woodland to pick up a check. The cause of the attack was unknown, said Guthrie.

Bath and Mann were victims a few weeks ago in Sutter County of a beating and assault with a deadly weapon, Guthrie said.

SUTTER COUNTY

Arraignment set in IHOP shooting

A 44-year-old Fresno man was held to answer Thursday in Sutter County Superior Court on an attempted murder charge in connection with a March 20 shooting at Yuba City's IHOP restaurant, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Judge Perry Parker set a May 16 arraignment for Jessie Hipolito Pena, 44, who is also charged with assault with a firearm. The victim was Yuba County resident Obadiah Samuel Mitchell, 34.

The shooting in the restaurant's parking lot allegedly began when Pena confronted Mitchell inside the restaurant about using foul language. He went to his vehicle to retrieve a gun and then asked Mitchell to step outside, according to police.

Pena is being held without bail in the Sutter County Jail.

SHERIDAN

Big rig crashes on Highway 65

A big rig driven by an Olivehurst woman crashed Thursday morning and caught fire on Highway 65 near Sheridan, backing up commuter traffic into Wheatland.

The accident occurred at 7:49 a.m. and the highway reopened in both directions at 9:35.

According to the CHP, a northbound Dodge Charger driven by Holly Harper, 35, of Sheridan, was waiting to make a left turn into a driveway when it was struck from behind by the Kenworth tractor-trailer driven by Christa Hastey. The big rig's fuel tank exploded after the impact.

The collision pushed the Charger into the southbound lane, into the path of a Mazda Tribute minivan driven by Kelley Beck, 31, of Citrus Heights. Beck served sharply to the right to avoid the Charger and lost control. The minivan rolled twice.

Beck, Harper and two children in Beck's vehicle were transported to hospitals for treatment of minor injuries. Hastey was not harmed.

The accident is under investigation by the CHP's Auburn office.

DEA could search hangar

Yuba County airport manager Mary Hansen said she knew an airport hangar was being investigated by the federal Drug Enforcement Agency, but she hasn't been contacted directly about it by authorities.

In an indictment against a Lake Wildwood couple, the DEA named the hangar as subject to seizure, in connection with their arrest for suspicion of marijuana distribution.

Hansen said the hangar is on leased airport property but is part of a group owned by a private company.

Fair bill passes committee

A bill by state Sen. Doug LaMalfa, R-Richvale, giving state fairs more ability to manage their own budgets has passed a Senate committee.

Senate Bill 899 would eliminate requirements for the state Department of General Services to oversee purchases, hiring and contracting by county fairs, allowing fair directors to buy items at lower cost and work toward being self supporting.

In a press release, LaMalfa said the bill's unanimous passage in the Senate Agriculture Committee made sense because the state has stopped spending money on county and regional fairs.

"This bill goes a long way toward that goal, but more work remains to be done," LaMalfa said.
