Briefs: Fire leaves 14 people homeless in Yuba City

A fire left 14 people temporarily homeless this week, after it damaged five units at the Kelly Apartments complex on Clark Avenue in Yuba City.

American Red Cross of Northeastern California CEO Martha Griese said residents in 10 more apartments were also out of a home because electricity couldn't be immediately restored to the apartment row where the fire took place. No one was injured by the Monday fire.

Griese said the displaced residents were told they could stay at a temporary shelter set up in Marysville to help victims of a weekend fire that devastated a residence hotel, but the Yuba City residents had not gone there.

Yuba City fire officials did not return a call Tuesday asking about a possible cause for the fire.

The Red Cross is seeking donations to assist victims of both fires. For information, call 891-0885.

Yuba County

Realignment plan gets approval

Yuba County supervisors approved a plan to proceed with state prison realignment Tuesday, with one supervisor wishing good luck to the committee in charge of implementing the plan.

On a 4-0 vote with one supervisor absent, supervisors approved how the county will process nonviolent, nonsexual, nonserious felons sentenced to serve their time in county jails, beginning Saturday.

The committee for the plan, chaired by county Probation Officer Jim Arnold, gave supervisors an overview of how realignment will work at a hearing last week.

First 5 chief resigns

First 5 Yuba Executive Director Jenny Sharkey is stepping down next month to join California State University Chico's Research Foundation in the Center for Nutrition and Activity Promotion.

Sharkey, who has her bachelor's degree in child development from Chico State, has overseen the agency as it helped start a Yuba County recreation program but also saw part of its financial reserves taken earlier this year as part of the state's 2011-12 budget solution.

Sharkey did not mention a replacement, who would be chosen by the county First 5 commission. The agency has a mandate to use tobacco tax dollars to create education and health programs aimed at children up to age 5.

Process begins to find new auditor

On a 5-0 vote, the Yuba County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday took two steps toward filling a looming vacancy in the office of auditor-controller.

With Auditor-Controller Dean Sellers stepping down at year's end with three years left in his term, supervisors directed County Administrator Robert Bendorf to begin a process to appoint someone to finish the term.

Supervisor John Nicoletti, with support from the rest of the board, also suggested forming a committee to study the position and the qualifications to see if they could be tweaked and made slightly more stringent.

He also said he'd prefer to see the position remain elected, rather than having a county ballot measure asking whether the position should be appointed by supervisors.
