Briefs: Man crashes in short chase
A Yuba City man was arrested Wednesday after crashing his car into a traffic light pole while trying to get away from a Sutter County sheriff's deputy, authorities said.
Satpal Baraich, 37, was booked into the Sutter County Jail on suspicion of evading police, obstruction and drunken driving, Undersheriff Jeff Pierce said.
Deputies tried to stop Baraich just after 12:30 a.m. near Bridge Street and Highway 99 on a traffic infraction. Baraich fled at high speed, but clipped the curb at Bridge and Cooper streets and hit the light pole, Pierce said.
Baraich ran, but was tracked down near A Street and arrested. The chase last less than one mile. Only minor injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved, authorities said.
Baraich is scheduled for arraignment on Friday in Sutter County Superior Court.
SUTTER COUNTY
Hazard plan being updated
Sutter County has begun updating its hazard mitigation plan, starting with two meetings at the Veterans Memorial Hall on Wednesday.
Mandated open meetings were held to give the public the chance to become more involved in the planning, said John DeBeaux Jr., emergency operations manager for Sutter County.
"We are doing our due diligence," he said.
During presentations, officials outlined steps that need to be taken when planning for an emergency. They also described a number of changes being considered in the update, which include putting an emphasis on flood and tornado preparedness.
Yuba City and Live Oak, in addition to other jurisdictions, are partnering with the county.
