Rice growers support youth
Rice farmers from Colusa, Glenn and Butte counties joined together to support youth groups that help show the importance of agriculture and are also donating to food banks for the needy in the three counties.
Local growers, part of a group called $20 in 2010 Farm and Trade Alliance based in Colusa, purchased animals auctioned by members of 4-H, Future Farmers of America and similar groups at the recent Colusa County Fair.
The purchase included the Grand Champion steer.
The beef, lamb and pork was processed at a local facility and is being distributed to food banks including Oroville Rescue Ministries.
The group plans to make a similar donation of livestock purchased at the Butte County Fair, which runs Aug. 25 to 29 in Gridley.
For more information about the program, contact Vaughna Platz at 345-4140.
