Driver dies in fiery crash
The driver of a Volkswagen Passat died early Thursday when the vehicle missed a turn in the road, launched into the air, struck a tree and burst into flames, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Given the severity of the impact, it is believed the driver died immediately.The driver's identity is unknown, as is whether drugs or alcohol was a factor in the crash, a press release states.
The vehicle was headed west on Riego Road at 1:10 a.m. and approached the “T” intersection with Garden Highway at a high speed, zoomed through the intersection and flew into the yard of a residence.
While in the air, the vehicle struck a fence post and then a large oak tree about 12 feet up from its base. When the car dropped to the ground, it burst into flames.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information but has not spoken with CHP is asked to call 674-5141.
