East Nicolaus
Smoke bomb ignites house
A smoke bomb placed under an East Nicolaus house to drive out rodents ignited the home, according to a Sutter County Fire Department report.
The fire, reported at 6 p.m. Tuesday, heavily damaged the single-family home in the 1900 block of Berry Road, leaving it uninhabitable. Only the owner, who was not named, was home and he was not injured, said fire Capt. Dan Root.
The rodent bomb apparently ignited insulation under the home.
The fire then spread to the floor and walls, Root said.
An estimated cost of the damage was not available.
The Pleasant Grove, Linda and Oswald-Tudor fire departments assisted the East Nicolaus Fire Department.
Plumas Lake
Man arrested in embezzlement
A 38-year-old Plumas Lake man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of embezzling $2,000 to $3,000 a month for three years or more from a Lincoln landfill, according to the Placer County Sheriff's Department.
John Alcocer, 38, an employee of Placer County Facility Services, was arrested at the Western Regional Sanitary Landfill and booked into Placer County Jail, said sheriff's spokeswoman Dena Erwin.
Erwin said details of the suspected embezzlement were not available.
"An investigation into the charges began when a contractor noticed unusual activity related to Alcocer's work" and reported it to employees, Erwin said.
Alcocer was released because of a federal order to reduce jail overcrowding. His initial appearance in Placer County Superior Court is set for Dec. 8.
