Your guide to what's hot for the Fourth

Children and adults are pointing their fingers at "Crazy Eyeballs," ground blooms and big finale fountains at Mid-Valley fireworks stands to stock up for Friday's Independence Day celebrations.

Robert Hendricks, who operates a stand in Yuba City benefiting the Faith Christian School's athletic program, said initial sales of "Safe and Sane" fireworks started off good, despite the Northern California fires and Gov. Schwarzenegger's related recommendation urging people not to buy or use fireworks. Schwarzenegger had considered a statewide ban.

"Piccolo Petes," the small fireworks with deafening screams ,are popular, and sparklers remain a classic favorite. Big fountains like "Mad Maxx" and "Delirium" are exciting, Hendricks said. Last year, "Jack of Hearts" and "Pink Diamonds" sold out at some fireworks stands.

Pete Campbell, a volunteer at the stand, said he likes the "Killer Bees" because they scream and sparkle.

"It makes for a fun night," he said.

Jene Hynok at the Mudville 10 Softball stand in Marysville said "Apache Firedances" — fountains that keep onlookers guessing — are popular. Anything that whistles, and finales like "Komodo 3000," sell quickly. "King of Bling" sold out last year, he said.

Hynok recommends buying July Fourth fireworks sooner rather than later.

"If you know what you want, the earlier you come, the better," he said.

FIREWORKS SAFETY TIPS

• Use only legal fireworks in the manner they were intended.

• Fireworks and sparklers should only be used outdoors with adult supervision.

• Don't light fireworks near dry vegetation, buildings or combustible materials.

• Have a bucket of water and a hose nearby.

• Never try to re-light a "dud" firework. Wait 20 minutes and put it in a bucket of water.

• Fireworks and alcohol do not mix. Have a "designated lighter" if you are drinking.

• Carry fireworks in their original package or box, never in your pocket.

• Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

• Obey all local laws regarding fireworks.

HOMELESS SHELTER?
Yuba City is considering using the former fire station No. 4 on Walton Avenue as a cold-weather shelter for homeless families. Is this a good idea?
Yes. We've gone too long with limited options for homeless families.
It's a good idea, but the fire station is a bad location for this.
No. The city has better things they can use the building for.
I'm not sure.
