It's the season for flu vaccinations in Yuba-Sutter
WHAT: Flu shot clinic for Yuba County residents.
WHEN: 8:30 a.m.-noon and 1 p.m. -4 p.m. Wednesday.
WHERE: Yuba County Health & Human Services, 5730 Packard Ave., Suite 100, Linda.
COST: Free.
The shot doesn't hurt, takes about five minutes and can be free.
Yuba County residents, as part of National Influenza Vaccine Week, can get free flu shots on Wednesday at the county Health & Human Services building in Linda.
A $10 donation is requested other days, said Katrina Henry, director of nurses for county Health & Human Services.
"We ask," Henry said of the donation. "But we won't refuse anybody."
Shots are offered Tuesdays and Fridays in Linda from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at 5730 Packard Ave., Suite 100. The site is closed for lunch from noon-1 p.m.
Flu shots were free Monday, and Marysville resident Mike Graham, 59, was among the people at the county building. Graham, who came to Marysville from Minnesota, where he was a dock worker on the Mississippi River, said he gets a flu shot just about every year.
"I think I skipped once or twice," he recalled.
Lisa Hernandez, a secretary who lives in Marysville, happened to see the sign about free flu shots and came in.
"It doesn't hurt at all," she said.
Sutter County Public Health held a drive-through flu vaccine clinic on Sept. 29 at Riverbend Elementary School in Yuba City and vaccinated 300 people. Four school flu vaccine clinics were held in November, with 612 children vaccinated. A second round will be held in January.
The flu vaccine is available at Sutter County's regular walk-in immunization clinic at Sutter County Public Health, 1445 Veterans Memorial Circle, Yuba City. The clinic is held 1 p.m.-4 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays, and 8 a.m.-11 a.m Fridays.
Sutter County accepts a $5 donation for flu shots, but it is not required, and no one will be turned away.
Judy Mikesell, director of public health nursing for Sutter County, said it is important to focus on the flu.
"We just don't want people to get too complacent because they haven't seen it," she said.
The federal Food and Drug Administration has said this year's influenza H3N2 and B viruses differ from those in the 2011-12 influenza vaccines. Vaccination remains the cornerstone of preventing influenza, the FDA said.
