Butte County crash leads to Highway 99 closure

The California Department of Transportation said this morning that Highway 99 is closed at Nelson Road south of Chico because of a traffic incident.

The roadway reopened sometime before 5:45 p.m.

A southbound tractor-trailer hauling onions slammed into 50 feet of guardrail late Thursday and took out a concrete head rail on a ditch crossing, according to Caltrans.

Pacific Gas & Electric power lines were also taken down in the crash.

Nobody was injured.

Caltrans offered these detours:

  • Northbound 99 to Highway 162, east to Highway 70 and back to 99
  • Southbound 99 to Highway 149 to 70, to 162 and back to 99
