Update: Oroville man critical after hit-and-run accident

An Oroville motorcyclist tried to avoid a collision Friday by laying his Harley-Davidson down on Highway 99 but suffered major injuries, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

Dennis L. May, 59, was taken by helicopter to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition late Friday afternoon.

Occupants of the vehicle May hit fled on foot and are being sought by the CHP and Sutter County Sheriff’s Department.

According to the report, May was traveling south on Highway 99 shortly after noon when a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was eastbound on Oswald Road, failed to stop for a stop sign.

May laid his bike down but hit the left rear wheel and fender of the Jeep, which did not stop.

A witness followed the Jeep and saw the driver run a red light at Highway 99 and Barry Road and two stop signs before the vehicle broke down on Walton Avenue south of Starr Road, the report said.

Three men got out and ran into an orchard east of Walton Avenue. CHP officers and Sheriff’s Department deputies, aided by a helicopter and K-9 team, were unable to find them, the report said.
