The Yuba-Sutter community is "going green" this weekend at the second annual Recycled Art competition during the Yuba City Fall Home and Garden Show.

The two-day home and garden show starts at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds. Admission is $5 per adult and $4 for seniors.

According to organizer Andrew Coolidge, 90 entries are part of the recycled art contest that gives people the opportunity to celebrate recycling and find ways to reuse items.

The art contest entries, submitted by artists of all ages, are on display both days mainly in the Flower House.

After receiving nine entries for the contest's first year in 2007, organizers were expecting 30 or 40 entries, Coolidge said.

Last year's art included handcrafted dolls made from recycled clothes labels, metal artwork from recycled steel and tote bags made from plastic shopping bags.

The home and garden show's more than 220 exhibits include information ranging from home care such carpeting, contractors, landscaping and swimming pools, to jewelry, financial investment to animal care to sports.

In addition, the event includes cooking demonstrations both days, a new food court, children's activities and an RV and fifth-wheel show and sale.

Entertainment includes the Yuba-Sutter Taiko Drummers at 11 a.m. and 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday and the Wheels of Balance Bicycle Stunt Team at 12:30 and 3 p.m. Sunday.

HOMELESS SHELTER?
Yuba City is considering using the former fire station No. 4 on Walton Avenue as a cold-weather shelter for homeless families. Is this a good idea?
Yes. We've gone too long with limited options for homeless families.
It's a good idea, but the fire station is a bad location for this.
No. The city has better things they can use the building for.
I'm not sure.
