Storm hits Mid-Valley

A late autumn storm today has brought a wind advisory to the Mid-Valley — along with forecasts of heavy snowfall in the Sierra Nevada.

A low-pressure system is creating gusts across most of the Central Valley region, according to Angus Barkhuff, forecaster for the National Weather Service in Sacramento. Winds in Yuba-Sutter will pick up from the south-southeast throughout the afternoon, reaching speeds of 15 to 30 mph and gusting to 40 mph.

Rainfall arrived this morning and is predicted to reach one-quarter to one-half inch in most of the Mid-Valley, with isolated areas receiving up to 3/4 inch, the weather service said. Partial clearing is expected in the late afternoon before the return of scattered showers tonight.

Temperatures in the Mid-Valley are expected to top out in the mid-50s, with a nighttime low in the high 30s.

Elsewhere, the storm pattern has triggered a winter storm warning in the Sierra Nevada, including Interstate 80 east to Reno. Snowfall is forecast to reach 1 to 2 feet above the 7,000-foot elevation, and 6 to 12 inches between 4,000 and 7,000 feet.
