2 Yuba City mothers accused of shoplifting with kids at Walmart

Family time at Walmart ended in jail time for two Yuba City mothers on Sunday, after the pair used their children to help them steal more than 340 items, Yuba City police said Monday.

Theodora Dudley, 26, and Kandis Irby-Sampley, 27, were arrested at the store after attempting to leave through the tire department with two shopping carts full of unpaid merchandise, police said. Alongside them were their 3-year-old, 6-year-old and 7-year-old children.

"They were stuffing DVDs into the kids' diaper bags," police spokeswoman Shawna Pavey said.

Scissors, flip-flops, two DVD players and a "significant number" of Blu-rays and fishing lures were among the items in the duo's shopping baskets, Pavey said.

In all, the two mothers attempted to steal about $1,780 worth of merchandise, she said. Pavey said she doesn't believe the incident was an accident.

"Given the significant number of items taken, I don't think that was the case," she said.

Both mothers were arrested on suspicion of burglary, conspiracy to commit a crime and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

They were booked into the Sutter County Jail on Sunday, but were released Monday morning.
