Elks donate to annual city pool fundraiser

Fundraising has officially begun for the 2013 swimming season in Willows.

The Willows Elks kicked off the city's annual fundraising effort with a $1,000 donation to the city pool on Jan 22.

"The Elks the past three years has really stepped forward," said Recreation Director Carol Lemenager. "They give us a check every year."

Leading Knight Lucia Quinn presented the donation on behalf of the Elks Foundation.

The Elks, along with other non-profit organizations, businesses and individuals help Lemenager raise about $30,000 each year to keep the pool open.

The city's pool has been in operation more than 60 years, but in 2011 was on the verge of closing due to budget cuts by the City Council, officials said.

Since then, Lemenager has relied on donations from the community, hot dog fundraisers outside the pool and a large spring raffle.

"The community's support is very much appreciated," she said.
