Sacramento
Man guilty of scamming FEMA

A Sacramento man fraudulently collected $3,000 in Hurricane Katrina aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and stayed in a Marysville motel at the agency's expense, according to U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott.

Andre D. Morning, 53, pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court in Sacramento to filing the false claim and faces up to five years in prison.

Morning collected the aid in 2005, claiming his primary residence near New Orleans had been destroyed. The address turned out to be that of a government office building, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Rodriguez.

Morning's sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 26.

Yuba County
Supes OK property definition changes

An ordinance that defines a foreclosed home or abandoned property was approved Tuesday by Yuba County supervisors.

The ordinance, which goes in effect 30 days after approval, will enable code enforcement to clean properties that have been abandoned due to foreclosure if the property owner does not do so in an ample amount of time.

"We give property owners every opportunity to come into compliance," said Jeremy Strang, division manager for Yuba County code enforcement.

If the county does the work, which includes mowing and cleaning lawns, Strang said property owners will be billed $93 per hour and an additional $100 daily administrative fee every day payment is late.

Strang said with the high number of foreclosures, finding property owners could be difficult.

HOMELESS SHELTER?
Yuba City is considering using the former fire station No. 4 on Walton Avenue as a cold-weather shelter for homeless families. Is this a good idea?
Yes. We've gone too long with limited options for homeless families.
It's a good idea, but the fire station is a bad location for this.
No. The city has better things they can use the building for.
I'm not sure.
