Beale Air Force Base

Family housing getting upgrade

Beale Air Force Base will be getting improvements to its family housing complex thanks to $10 million in contracts given to Allied Industries Inc. of Sacramento.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District gave out the small business contracts.

The contracts were for $4.8 million and $5.2 million, both to Allied Industries, and broken up into two phases.

The $5.2 million contract is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

In a statement, senior project manager John Harris said the 130 housing units will be upgraded, mold removed, windows and doors replaced, painting, bathrooms renovated and installing French drains outside the homes.

Both phases are scheduled to begin in mid-September, with completion expected by September 2011 for phase one and September 2012 for phase two.

November is Sikh month

On the last formal day of the Assembly, a resolution by Assemblyman Dan Logue to honor the Sikh community got a positive response from Sacramento lawmakers.

As a result of the unanimous "aye" vote Tuesday, November will be designated California Sikh Awareness and Appreciation Month. In a press release, Logue, R-Linda, said the resolution and the month's designation should serve to honor one of the state's notable and accomplished communities.

"This is the first time in state history that Sikhs are receiving recognition for their outstanding contributions to California," Logue said in the release, which made note of the heavy Sikh population in the Yuba-Sutter area, particularly in agriculture.

Sutter County

Planners allowed back-to-back terms

Planning officials in Sutter County will be able to serve twice as long at a stretch.

An ordinance passed Tuesday by the Board of Supervisors permits members of the Planning Commission to hold their posts for two consecutive terms, removing the limit of one term at a time.

Planning Division members said extending the maximum term would help preserve experience in zoning and development law within the commission, and lessen the chances of several freshman members joining at the same time.
