Yuba deputies arrest 2 in stabbings

Two men were arrested early Saturday in connection with separate stabbings, according to the Yuba County Sheriff's Department.

The victims underwent surgery at Rideout Memorial Hospital and were listed in stable condition Saturday night.

Deputies arrested David Frank Sears, 34, of the 1200 block of Melton Drive, Yuba City, at 4:20 a.m. in the 1900 block of Hammonton-Smartsville Road on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing his sister's ex-boyfriend in an altercation at her house, said Sgt. Joe Pomeroy.

Sears was booked into Yuba County Jail, where he was held without bail.

The victim, a 43-year-old Olivehurst man, went to the woman's house to retrieve some personal property, but an altercation soon started between the ex-girlfriend and a female friend of his, Pomeroy said. The ex called Sears, her brother, who arrived and allegedly stabbed the man.

Marysville police found Sears after a pursuit along Sicard Street and detained him until Yuba County detectives arrived for the arrest, Pomeroy said.

In August 2006, Sears was sentenced to seven years in prison after he pleaded no contest to two counts of assault with a knife in Yuba County. He had stabbed two people in May and June of that year.

Sears was arrested in July 2006 after a three-hour standoff with Marysville police.

In April 2002, Sears was arrested after witnesses told deputies he beat and robbed a man at a Linda home.

At that time, Sears was on active parole with the California Department of Corrections for an assault with a deadly weapon conviction.

In Saturday's other incident, deputies arrested Angel Manuel Castro Hurtado, 18, of the 6000 block of Gossett Way, Linda, at 1:30 a.m. at the El Rodeo in Olivehurst on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly stabbing someone in front of the bar, Pomeroy said.

Bouncers did not witness the fight but went outside and found the victim and Hurtado, who had just been in an altercation.

The victim, a 23-year-old man, said Hurtado stabbed him and the bouncers detained him until deputies arrived. Hurtado denied stabbing the man but admitted they had been in an altercation.

A weapon was found at the scene, Pomeroy said. It's not known if either Hurtado or the victim had been drinking.

Hurtado was held on $30,000 bail at Yuba County Jail.
