Talk Back: Shanghai Bend, composer's death

The clay berm that once kept stripers, shad, steelhead trout and salmon in a holding pattern beneath the water's surface at Yuba City's Shanghai Bend is no more.

I honestly never knew about the falls until this past summer. And Ive lived most of my life, but my interest in the river has always been pretty restricted to the Shad Pad and Beer Can Beach ( the Yuba one). Sad to hear this though, but it is natures course, just like the island at the Shad Pad washing away. I really miss that island.

— Marie Klingenfuss

Unfortunate. This is in the memories of my kids where they hiked, played and fished. However, it is natural geomorphology. Riverboats used to come up from Sacramento to Marysville a long time ago. The river constantly changes.

— Jeffrey Spencer

Wow I can't believe the falls fell. I used to spend every summer out there :(

— Felicia Bearden

Had so much fun at the river growing up.

Maestro Michael Goodwin was "a beautiful, musical gift" to the North State community, according to colleagues and friends. The foothills orchestra conductor died in a car crash.

I had the pleasure of working with this talented man several times as Auburn Symphony and Apollo Orchestras, A wonderful musical contributor cut short...

— Chris Christensen

Prayers out to the family who lost someone, and to the woman and children for a quick recovery. God bless all those who stopped to help. People can be amazing when there is an emergency, especially with children involved! I have lived in Oregon House, and those roads have always scared me, especially when it was rainy or foggy.

— Mona Harpol Langer

I feel a profound sense of loss -- for all who made and heard music that this man worked to produce... Prayers for the families affected...

— Steve Allison

Our prayers are with Michael and his family. Paul, Laura and Anna Preston.

For drivers going between the North Beale Road part of Linda and the newer Edgewater neighborhood, Grove Avenue is a quick way to do so.

Speedbumps are the way to go. That is too narrow of a street to be speeding through, you can almost reach out your window and knock on the front door of one of the homes there as you pass by.

— Bradley Gray

People RACE up and down that street at all hours of the night/day, it's ridiculous. I understand the emergency response issue, but something NEEDS to be done.

— Jamie Hylen
