Briefs: Fundraiser set for crash victim

A fundraiser is set for Wednesday for the family of a Plumas Lake woman who died last month in a car wreck.

Rachel Lynn Gertz was killed Oct. 20 when her Honda Accord veered off Feather River Boulevard and crashed into a steep ditch near the intersection of Myrna Avenue.

Gertz, 27, is survived by her husband, Ryan, and two children, ages 1 and 3, according to a memorial Facebook page.

A celebration-of-life fundraiser features vendors for "early Christmas shopping," haircuts, Zumba, wine tasting and a silent auction, with all of the proceeds going to Gertz's family.

The fundraiser is set from 4 -9 p.m. at the Arboga Community Center at 1662 Broadway in Olivehurst.

Former owner pleads no contest

The former owner of a pair of Jack in the Box restaurants in Yuba City has pleaded no contest in Placer County to grand theft, misappropriation of sales tax and nonpayment of unemloyment insurance contributions.

Abolghassem (Abe) Alizadeh, a Granite Bay resident, made the plea Friday in connection with an investigation by the state Board of Equalization. State officials began investigating Alizadeh in 2010, not long after he declared bankruptcy and the two restaurants, along with more 60 others in Northern Califiornia, suddenly closed their doors for a day.

The state's investigation found Alizadeh had failed to pay more than $5.4 million in sales tax to the state, and another $1.8 million to the state Employment Development Department. His sentencing will be continued to allow him to make restitution.

Both Yuba City restaurants have since been acquired by another owner. The Marysville Jack in the Box was not under Alizadeh's ownership.
