Talk Back: Jan. 11, 2010
Gov. Schwarzenegger gives the State of the State and releases a proposed budget:
"Well, does it really matter what the Governor says? Our legislature continues to be firmly polarized. We can continue to expect to see politicians voting along party lines to the detriment of the populace! I am pleased that the Governor and Senate Majority Leader do agree on halting the assault on education. My real hope would be to make drastic cuts in the number of state employees--primarily through attrition..."
— msreason
"We are ranked 47th in number of state employees per population (138/10000). Exactly where do the cuts start? Yes, layoffs will probably be coming."
— moonlit
"I know, lets vote more liberals in so they can raise more taxes. That is how to get out of debt. Or we could get rid of them and get some conservatives in office who will cut spending and get rid of some political appointments that are not needed. Or we can just keep on status quo and complain."

More thoughts on the Hotel Marysville:
"Make it into lofts - a lot of cities are taking older industrial buildings and hotels and turning them into lofts. They can be done really nicely and because they are generally pretty affordable they attract people who want to put down roots. Would be a great way to help Marysville - I really hope that something good comes from this."

"The location is such an ugly corner, do you really think it will fill up with tenants? Just what is historic of the hotel? That it's 84 years old? Listen to all the damage listed - is it really worth repairing? Marysville blew it when the old structures (older than the hotel) were torn down to make way for Mervyns. They possibly could have had another "old Sacramento". Or am I incorrect. I say tear the thing down and build a park, get some green going. in that area."

"Casino Marysville! I'm not one for gambling, but I've been inside that place, Theres A Live theater stage, a grand ball room. That place has so much history locked up inside I would hate to see it torn down."

Marysville's Amicus Books will close March 1:
"So sad! What does it say about Yuba-Sutter now that we can't keep any bookstores?"
— chareee
"Quite unfortunate, but it is just a consequence of our way of living and the progress of technology. I can go to Fye and ask for 'The Sands of the Kalahari' DVD. They tell me, 'we don't have it in stock, but we can order it for you, and will be here next week.' I reply 'Thanks, but don't bother, that is why Amazon.com is for', and I order online, two day delivery. It is just the way things are going."
— kvasir40
"It's a shame. However, much like the expensive kitchen place people in the Yuba-Sutter area are too busy driving around in their lifted 4WDs to care about reading. Know your demographic."
— 3drage
"Well, good for you, Yuba-Sutter, now you'll have no book stores at all. But, then, the new season of "American Idol" is just around the corner. Happy days."

A Yuba County panel approves a skateboard ban in parks, sending it to the Board of Supervisors:
"Now we need to approve the creation of a skateboarding park."
— thatonedude
"Skateboarders are the potheads. Anyone with their eyes open and raising teens can easily see and know that. They for the most part don't harm anyone, but they can do damage to parks and often times injure themselves which is a liability."
— wakeupplease
"So let me understand this. No lawn darts, no horseshoes, and no skatebaording? Parks are meant for these activities to include BBQ's! Many parks I have seen and been to have areas for all of this. Why not set up different themed parks? Doesn't seem so hard to me to be able to enjoy all these activities and be safe instead of banning them."
