Knife-wielding man steals backpacks from Big 5 in Yuba City

A knife-wielding man robbed the Big 5 Sporting Goods store in Yuba City over the weekend, police said, and made off with two backpacks after he flashed the knife at a store employee.

Nobody was injured.

Police described the thief as a bearded white man with a "large stomach," about 6-foot and weighing 230 to 250 pounds. He wore a dark, hooded camouflage jacket, a baseball-style cap, a blue shirt and jeans, police said.

A man brandished the knife about 6:50 p.m. Saturday at a store employee who confronted him as he was leaving the Colusa Avenue store without paying for the backpacks, Yuba City Police Lt. Tom Tappe said.

The man entered the store and pulled two backpacks off the shelves after looking around for several minutes. He took a sand-colored Fieldline Omega OPS pack, valued at $90 and a black Timberhawk Guthook waist pack worth about $50, Tappe said.

The employee confronted the man as he was leaving, police said.

Police said the thief pulled the knife, held it against his own face and continued walking out the store without saying a word. He headed west toward the nearby Payless shoe store.
