Sacramento
One from Yuba may make panel
The odds against a Mid-Valley resident helping draw new political boundaries next year doubled, as a panel of state auditors eliminated one of two Yuba County residents who were still in the pool for the state's redistricting commission.
By cutting 309 applicants because of a lack of positive recommendations from three reviewers, there are 314 applicants remaining for the 14-member Citizens Redistricting Commission. No Colusa or Sutter County residents were in either group.
Remaining applicants will fill out a Statement of Economic Interests, followed by the selection of 40 Democrats, 40 Republicans and 40 from another party or decline-to-state for interviews, leading to the selection of the final 14.
Using 2010 U.S. Census data, the commission will draw new political boundaries for state Senate, Assembly and Board of Equalization districts to go into effect in 2012. A November ballot measure would add state congressional districts to the work list.
Yuba-Sutter
Familes sought as AFS hosts
Families in Yuba-Sutter are sought to host exchange students participating in AFS, formerly known as the American Field Service.
Students in the program from Italy, Switzerland, France and Thailand attended Sutter, Yuba City and River Valley high schools this past year.
The families are asked to provide the students a bed, meals and the same guidance and care given to their children for five months or an academic year.
For information about hosting an exchange student, call 800-876-2377 or visit www.afsusa.org.
